The Partnership

The University of South Carolina has partnered with Darlington County School District and Sumter School District to deliver America: A Story That Must Not Be Forgotten. The partnership provides professional development for 40 teachers from grades 3, 4, 5, 8, and 11 (the grades in which American history and geography are taught in South Carolina) enabling them to advance their expertise in American history, civics and government, and geography content, promote civic participation, utilize media literacy competencies and implement literacy strategies when teaching American history and geography.

Teacher Instruction

This project includes instruction in the 8 NAEP Historical Periods, micro-credentials focusing on media literacy, the production of 120 technologically driven historical curriculum storyboards, creation and implementation of student civic engagement activities and provides professional development opportunities for non-participants.

Primary Goals

The primary goals of this project are: (1) to improve the quality of teaching and student achievement in American history, civics and government, and geography in elementary and secondary schools, and (2) provide professional development, with a focus on underserved populations, demonstrating innovation, scalability, and accountability.

America: A Story That Must Not Be Forgotten is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education.
