On March 22, 2025, our U.S. Department of Education funded project, America: A Story That Must Not Be Forgotten, had its second-year spring civic engagement workshop.

This year, the 40 educators from Sumter and Darlington County School Districts were provided with examples of potential civic engagement projects that could be implemented to enhance civic engagement instruction and education in their classrooms by Civic Engagement Coordinator Dr. Kendall Deas. Assignments and activities the teachers were exposed to during the workshop presentation included the following:

  1. Interview a Civic Leader
  2. Community Problem Solving Project
  3. Volunteer Challenge,
  4. Class Mock Election or Debate
  5. Letter Writing Campaign.

At this year’s workshop, the teachers were also shown a website to access numerous digital examples of class assignments and classroom activities to enhance civic engagement instruction and education in their classrooms from Clemson University’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded Mellon Teacher Scholar Initiative. This Clemson site is a national repository of class assignments and classroom activities to aid educators across the country with encouraging students to become more civically engaged citizens and enhancing civic education and learning in their classrooms.

America: A Story That Must Not Be Forgotten is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education.
